Blackwater rafting
This is the underground version of white water rafting, except you are not sitting together in one raft, instead make you way though the cave with wetsuits, gumboots and flashlights on your helmet and float down parts of the caves in rubber inner tyre tubes! Some of the more challenging trips also incorporate abseiling down waterfalls, and a flying fox.
Where:  Waitomo
Cost: from $85-$335.

Dolphin swimming or watching
Swimming is in the open ocean with wild dolphins and watching from the same boat.
Where: Bay of Islands, Auckland, Tauranga and Kaikoura

Jet boating
This is a Kiwi invention designed to scare you to death, then revive you with  some skillful manoeuvres. You are totally at the mercy of your driver.
Where: Rotorua, Taupo, Bay of Plenty, Taumarunui, Wanganui, Motueka, Nelson, Rakaia, Hanmer, Christchurch, Queenstown, Kurow  and Riverton.
Cost: from $65 to $129.

Sea kayaking & canoeing

White water sledging
Take a boogie  board,  lie flat out on it, then plunge into the raging torrents of the nearest river. Got the hang of it? Sounds scary, apparently huge fun.
