Milford Sound overnight cruises

PHOTO: Awe-inspiring Milford Sound - Mitre Peak dominates the skyline

An overnight cruise in Milford Sound is a "once in a lifetime" experience.

It provides a unique opportunity to explore this renowned fiord in the late afternoon when the day visitors have departed.

An overnight cruise begins with a relaxed cruise out to the Tasman Sea, keeping a look-out for wildlife along the way. The flexible itinerary allows plenty of time to view the spectacular scenery and explore close to waterfalls and other points of interest. If the weather is suitable, the crew may hoist the sails during the cruise.

As evening draws closer, the vessel moors in a sheltered bay, providing the opportunity to go kayaking or explore in a small boat with a nature guide.

Real Journeys has two overnight cruise vessels - the Milford Mariner and Milford Wanderer. Both vessels have all the comforts of home, including a cosy dining saloon and a delicious three-course dinner.

On board, there is a range of accommodation to suit most budgets and tastes, from ensuite cabins to quad-share bunk style accommodation with shared bathroom facilities.

In the morning, enjoy a cooked breakfast and another short cruise before returning to the Milford Sound wharf.

Overnight cruises depart daily from September to May, with coach connections from Queenstown and Te Anau.
